Standard Cleaning vs Deep Cleaning: Which Do You Actually Need?

The two services sound similar and cost very differently. Here is what actually separates them, and a straightforward way to work out which one your home needs right now.

The difference in one sentence

A standard clean maintains a home that is already in reasonable condition. A deep clean removes buildup that has accumulated over months or years.

That is not marketing language — it is a real difference in scope, time, and method. A standard clean wipes a surface. A deep clean gets underneath what is stuck to it.

What a standard clean covers

Kitchens and bathrooms cleaned and sanitised, surfaces dusted, floors vacuumed and mopped, trash out, high-touch points wiped. It is the visible, weekly-reality layer of a house. Done every one to four weeks, it keeps a home at a steady baseline.

What it does not do is fix a year of soap scum, grease film on cabinet fronts, or dust welded into baseboard paint. There is simply not enough time in a standard visit, and pretending otherwise is how clients end up disappointed.

What a deep clean adds

  • Baseboards, door frames, and trim hand-wiped rather than dusted
  • Grout scrubbed; soap scum and hard-water deposits removed
  • Cabinet fronts degreased — the difference is usually visible immediately in a kitchen
  • Behind and under accessible furniture
  • Reachable light fixtures, vents, switch plates, and ceiling fans
  • Around and behind small appliances

The full list is on our cleaning checklist.

A simple test

Walk into your bathroom and look at the line where the tub meets the tile. Then look at the top edge of a baseboard in a room you do not use much. Then run a finger along the top of a kitchen cabinet door.

If those three spots look fine, a standard recurring clean will keep your home where it is. If any of them made you wince, that is buildup, and no number of standard cleans will remove it — you need a deep clean first.

The sequence that actually saves money

The most common mistake is booking recurring standard cleans on a home that has not been deep cleaned. What happens next is predictable: the cleaner spends the first three or four visits fighting buildup instead of maintaining, the home never quite gets there, and the client concludes that professional cleaning does not work.

The sequence that works is: one deep clean, then standard visits to maintain it. You pay more once and less thereafter, and every visit after the first is spent on maintenance rather than catching up. Over six months, this is usually the cheaper path as well as the better one.

The exception. If your home has been consistently cleaned — by you or by someone else — you can start straight onto a standard recurring plan. If you are unsure, say so when you request a quote. We would rather talk you into the smaller service than sell you the bigger one and have you feel oversold.

How often to repeat a deep clean

If you maintain the home with recurring standard visits, most households do well with a deep clean once or twice a year — commonly a spring reset and again before the holidays. If you clean the home yourself in between, annually is a reasonable rhythm.

What about move-out cleaning?

That is a third category, not a bigger deep clean. A move-out clean assumes an empty property and prioritises what landlords and property managers inspect — inside cabinets, inside appliances, inside closets. A deep clean of an occupied home does not cover those, because they are full of your belongings.

Not sure? Ask.

Describe your home when you request a quote — roughly how long since the last professional clean, and what bothers you most. Cristina will tell you which service you need, including when that is the cheaper one.
